Kathleen Mundell, Director
Kathleen Mundell is the director of Cultural Resources, Inc., a non-profit working with communities on developing strategies that help sustain their local culture.  Ms. Mundell holds a Masters Degree in Folklore from Indiana University and has over twenty-five years experience in the fields of public sector folklore and community arts. She has worked as a folklorist for the Arts Council of Rockland, Pomona, New York; the West Nebraska Arts Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and the Great Lakes Arts Alliance in Cleveland, Ohio.  Ms. Mundell has produced radio series, festivals, educational programs in schools and 14 exhibitions on traditional culture.

Previous to her tenure at Cultural Resources, Inc., Ms. Mundell was the Traditional and Community Arts Associate for the Maine Arts Commission from 1989-2001. Her collaboration with Maine’s Wabanaki basketmakers resulted in a multi-tribal effort to preserve the ash basketry tradition and in the creation of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance as well as the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. Ms. Mundell pioneered a cultural inventory process called “Discovery Research,” detailed in “Sensing Place: A Guide to Community Culture,” which she co-authored with cultural geographer Hilary Frost-Kumpf.  She recently published “Guide to Ethnographic Marketing” (available through this website) with support from a research fellowship form the UNC Center for Craft, Creativity and Design and the National Endowment for the Arts.
